Job Summary

We are seeking to appoint a highly regarded Senior Clinician in Restorative Dentistry to lead the school’s successful Distance Learning Restorative Dentistry MSc Programme (
They will work under the direction of the Head of Education (PGT) and the Head of School and be responsible for the day to day running and development of this MSc programme. They will lead and coordinate an existing team of staff working on the programme to deliver an exceptional educational package. The appointee will be responsible for leadership, teaching, mentoring and associated administrative duties including progress monitoring and feeding into the schools reporting processes. They will also be actively involved in developing and contributing to the delivery of the school’s expanding CPD portfolio in Restorative Dentistry.

Main Duties

Management/Administration/ Professional

  • To work with the Head of School and Education (PGT) to develop and run the Master’s programme.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning and delivery of PG dental education going forward
  • To lead and coordinate delivery of the Distance Learning Restorative Dentistry MSc Programme through the University online platform (canvas) and residential courses.
  • To plan and execute the delivery of 2 residential packages associated with the Restorative Dentistry MSc programme.
  • To maintain registration with the GDC and preferably be on the specialist register in Restorative Dentistry
  • Active participation in subject group meetings
  • Undertake academic course-related administrative tasks, including attendance at Examination Boards, as appropriate
  • Undertake appropriate scholarships necessary to maintain effective teaching materials.
  • To participate in student recruitment activities where appropriate.
  • To ensure the University complies with all NHS policies and procedures relating to clinical care and to be a point of contact during the residential courses or while running CPD courses.
  • Ability to contribute to School/Unit management processes
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively

  • To inspire and enthuse students on the course and support them with their development in the discipline of Restorative Dentistry.
  • To be in close communication with registered students on the program to direct and support them through the course.
  • To monitor student progress and provide the necessary support whenever possible.
  • To support the educational team, in training, calibration and moderation of assessment of assignments throughout the programme.
  • Lead and participate in the lecture and tutorial programme.
  • Continually review and develop new teaching material with the educational team.
  • Prepare and coordinate the required teaching material conforming to relevant teaching policies, including those published by Specialty Teaching areas. To contribute to these policies where necessary through discussion with the area concerned.
  • Be a personal tutor to a group of students on the program and follow the university policy for personal tutoring.
  • Provide academic leadership and to contribute to teaching, learning and assessment in postgraduate programmes and CPD

Continuous Assessment/Feedback

  • Online marking of module assessments
  • Coordinate a professional record of student achievement with the support of professional services on a sessional basis including timely assessment.
  • Ensure that unsatisfactory performance is fed back in a supportive manner to students and documented appropriately.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to students on strengths and weaknesses as close to the event as possible.
  • Lead and coordinate the final module clinical vivas with professional services.

Person Specification


  • BDS or Equivalent with full General Dental Council registration (or eligibility)
  • Higher degree MSc or equivalent
  • Meets the requirements for Occupational Health Clearance and enhanced DBS screening.
  • Experience of undertaking the full range of responsibilities in relation to supervision, marking and examining to ensure students’ progress is being monitored and reported.
  • Evidence of being able to teach courses at all levels (i.e. undergraduate, postgraduate) through lectures, seminars and person supervision
  • Provide academic leadership and to contribute to teaching, learning and assessment in postgraduate programmes and CPD
  • Significant experience in the delivery of restorative dentistry and evidence of further training at postgraduate level.
  • Ability to become involved with the management of the School of Dentistry and to carry out other specific College and University roles and functions as may be reasonably required
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
  • Evidence of team working skills
  • Engage in personal training programmes in the University, which are consistent with the needs and aspirations of the individual and the College
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills in order to collaborate effectively in research and teaching activities
  • The appointee will be a diplomatic individual who is able to converse and present their written ideas clearly. They will also possess tact and diplomacy


  • PhD
  • Fellowship or membership of one of the Royal Colleges or equivalent
  • Registered on the GDC specialist list for Restorative Dentistry or Restorative mono-specialty
  • Teaching qualification
  • Evidence of applying innovative teaching approaches and materials to enable learning and enthuse students
  • Experience of developing approaches to teaching and learning which are appropriate for the University and subject area and reflect developing practices elsewhere
  • Be responsible for the design content of areas of teaching material.
  • CCST in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent.
