Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322. With potential progression once in post to £42,792 a year.

The Research Fellow will be based at the Birmingham Business School to support the activities of the City-Region Economic Development Institute (City-REDI). The City-REDI team comprises academics and consultancy services staff undertaking relevant and impactful research with local/national/international partners.
With significant funding from Research England (UKRI) City-REDI has established the West Midlands Regional Economic Development Institute (WMREDI). We work in partnership with regional stakeholders, including LEPs, Chamber of Commerce and local/combined authorities.
The post will support collaborative work in the region around evaluation and appraisal of economic interventions and programmes to support inclusive growth, innovation, industrial clusters, enterprise, employment, and skills. It originates from work developing our understanding of anchor institutions, specifically universities, and collaboration with the Centre for Local Economic Strategies developing the ‘Birmingham Approach’.
- Contribute to assessment of the evidence and impact of the role of universities in comparator local areas/regions and impacts of different anchor activities over time and space.
- Publish in academic journals and produce policy and practice outputs to support user engagement and impact.
- Support bids/ proposals for research funding.
- contribute to wider City-REDI academic activities, including seminars/conferences/external engagement events and support the development of practical tools and consultancy products/services.
The research encompasses qualitative case studies surveys, data analytics, impact evaluation (of policy interventions and regional investments) and econometric modelling. The candidate is expected to have some experience of undertaking evaluations or have appropriate transferrable skills from working in an applied research setting. A background in undertaking evaluations and or previous knowledge in economics, geography, labour market studies, management and business studies, planning, social policy, or political science would be preferrable. A knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative techniques, mixed methods, survey methods, process, developmental and impact evaluation or data analytics tools would be preferred.
We are particularly interested in candidates who have specialisms/experience in one or a combination of the following fields, in connection with regional growth:
- The role of universities in place and within a network of anchor institutions and the impact of activities
- The role of public sector in supporting economic regeneration and inclusive growth
- Innovation and/or commercialisation practices and policies relating to public service delivery especially procurement and employment practices.
- Enterprise development and business support.
- Data analytics, data science and/or evaluation, including the collection, integration, analysis, presentation and interpretation of data for social science research.
- Development of programme theories and monitoring and evaluation frameworks
- Undertaking policy and programme evaluation
- Applying different evaluation methodological approaches (e.g. economic modelling, realist evaluation, contribution analysis, , impact and value for money evaluations.
- Development of business cases following Green Book guidelines.
The candidate will have excellent communication and writing skills and a willingness to engage with partners in applied research. A record of publications and previous working experience in a similar multidisciplinary environment will be valuable. The candidates need to be able to work well independently and to function effectively in a team setting. We would like the successful candidate to take up the post as soon as possible.
To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities within an established research programme and/or specific research project.

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.
- Develop research objectives and proposals for own or joint research, with assistance of a mentor if required
- Contribute to writing bids for research funding
- Analyse and interpret data
- Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding
- Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars etc
- Supervise students on research related work and provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline
- Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods
- Undertake management/administration arising from research
- Contribute to Departmental/School research-related activities and research-related administration
- Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader
- Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews *
- Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters *
- Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research *
- Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines*
- Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.
- These indicative responsibilities may also be included in a research role at grade 6.
- First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications, or close to completion
- High level analytical capability
- Ability to communicate complex information clearly
- Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones
- Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively
- Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes
- Contribute to the planning and organising of the research programme and/or specific research project
- Co-ordinate own work with others to avoid conflict or duplication of effort
- Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly
