As this vacancy has limited funding the maximum salary that can be offered is Grade 6, salary £28,331 pro rata.

To assist in research (by carrying out data collection or analyses) to create knowledge through providing research support for the ESRC-funded project “The effect of gig economy work on workers’ financial (in)security and the mediating role of social security systems” (GIGWELL) led by the PI Dr Lorenza Antonucci.

Summary of Role

  • Work within specified research grant (“The effect of gig economy work on workers’ financial (in)security and the mediating role of social security systems”, GIGWELL)

  • Operate within area of specialism (social policy and digital sociology)

  • Contribute to data analysis and impact/communication

Main Duties/Responsibilities

The successful candidate will undertake key tasks including:

  • Undertake day-to-day responsibilities such as assisting the PI during the completion of field-work and the analysis

  • Liaising with the external stakeholders and report to the PI

  • Write monthly contributions for the Advisory Board mailing list

  • Assist the PI in conducting impact work with policy-makers and media

  • Collect research data, in particular through literature reviews and research interviews

  • Analyse qualitative research data as directed

  • Writing project reports and contributing to other outputs

  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters

  • Organise events (e.g. webinars) and meetings to facilitate the exchange with stakeholders

  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

  • Carry out administrative tasks related directly to the delivery of the research

Person Specification

The successful applicant will have: (as evidenced by CV and Cover Letter)

  • Good first and postgraduate (preferable) degree in Social Policy, Sociology or related subjects or equivalent (essential)

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills (essential)

  • Ability to analyse information and communicate effectively (essential)

  • Ability to access and organise resources successfully (essential)

  • Ability to work independently and under supervision (essential)

  • Training in research methodology (essential)

  • Knowledge of comparative social policy and/or labour market policies (essential)

  • Ability in using research evidence and conducting impact outside academia (essential)

  • Experience in conducting impactful work within academia(preferable)

  • Experience in analysing qualitative/digital material (preferable)

  • Knowledge of national and EU policy debates on gig work (preferable)
