Full time starting salary is normally in the range £41,526 to £49,553, with potential progression once in post to £55,750

Background

To devise and lead innovative multi-disciplinary creative concepts and strategies to exceed client expectations and drive growth. Challenged to have creative vision and business sense to both inspire and brainstorm fresh ideas, manage deliverables, and captivate the target market to provoke action. Point of reference for any multi-media channel creative plan that wants to make its way to the client.

Summary of Role

A hands on role proactively developing and inspiring innovative multi-media channel creative solutions across digital, social media, film, motion, photography, design and print which exceed client expectations and drive business growth, with a focus on expanding our digital offering. This role will create concepts across promotional, advertising and branding campaigns through a range of mediums, bringing together a mix of marketing expertise and business understanding. The role will approach client briefs agnostically.

As a member of the leadership team, the role leads a team of creative content producers. Someone that can inspire others, taking creative to a new level to drive growth. With exceptional creative foresight and a drive to inspire dynamic ideas that connect with all types of audiences to deliver the best multi-channel creative experience.

Main Duties

Creative

  • Deliver and lead all concept development including ideation, mock ups and creating pitch responses
  • Responsible for all creative output
  • Build, lead, and review work of the creative team in the production of all digital, social media, film, motion, photography, design and print collateral
  • Developing strategies and creative responses which are agnostic, understand and meet the objectives of the target audience
  • Spearhead and manage content strategy for both small-scale and large-scale projects, harnessing media strategy, digital and brand design, compelling content, and technology
  • Passionately pitching ideas to clients, often these maybe late requests with limited time to prepare
  • Lead on recommending and implementing new services to meet current and future client needs, keeping digital front of mind
  • Steering or writing content (copy writing and visual content)
  • Overseeing photo or media shoots
  • Sign off projects before they are presented to the client
  • Negotiating with clients to amend ideas in line with their wishes and explain what is and is not possible
  • Leading multiple projects from conception to completion in accordance with deadlines
  • Evaluating and, if necessary altering, the content of projects before completion
  • Conceive and implement concepts, guidelines and strategies in various creative projects and oversee them to completion
  • Review and approve multi-channel content production (includes copy) developed by the team, ensuring deliverables effectively address marketing goals and challenges
  • Produce fresh, innovative work that translates complex ideas into compelling multi-media channel experiences for visually sophisticated audiences
  • Present, or oversee presentation of final concepts
  • Ensuring all work adheres to and is consistent with the overall University of Birmingham brand guidelines or guidelines specific to the project
  • Selecting external suppliers when necessary
Relationships

  • Collaborate with account management to obtain knowledge of the clients’ requirements
  • Collaborate with the account management team in developing creative plans, analysing results, and identifying opportunities
  • Proactively participate and stay well connected with the external creative industry, ensuring there is a minimum quarterly feed of industry creative multi-media channel insight shared across the Creative Media team
  • Proactively horizon scan market trends, consumer needs, and the competitive landscape
  • Working with Head of Account Management (HoAM)/Account Management team to ensure all creative work meets the client brief
  • Support HoAM with accurate expenditure forecasting and budgeting
Leadership

  • Lead, direct and motivate a multi-channel content production team in the strategic development of content and deliverables
  • Oversee the Production Manager and be a point of escalation for any workflow planning
  • Proactively conduct brainstorming sessions with the creative team and clients, maintaining strategic and creative thinking to develop innovative and actionable creative initiatives in a fiscally responsible manner
  • Proactively participate and communicate ideas as a member of the Creative Media leadership team to develop and grow the business
  • Lead and manage a team – recruit, monitor, review and develop staff performance to ensure creativity and customer service are of the highest standard
  • Be a leader to your team, peers, colleagues, clients and suppliers
  • Maintain and share up to date knowledge of the market place, competitors and trends
  • Proactively participate and communicate ideas as a member of the Creative Media leadership team to develop and grow the business
  • Act as a role model to other members of the team in championing External Relations values and behaviours
  • Develop a deep understanding of the competitive landscape and customer knowledge
  • The role is a task and project driven role that may require work outside of core hours and is driven by schedules and by delivery deadlines. The post holder may therefore be required to work both flexible and extended hours to deliver.

Person Specification

Level of knowledge and/or educational qualifications required:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant area, plus significant relevant workplace experience in creative direction
  • Significant proven experience working on creative direction and concepting in advertising, marketing, film/media production or design sectors either in agency or corporate setting
  • Significant demonstrative digital , media, film, design experience, particularly with, but not limited to web, social and emerging technologies
  • Extensive proven experience creating multi-media channel marketing/advertising campaigns from developing vision and the message platform to overseeing production on time and budget
  • Hand-on experience in creative process, marketing, design and brand development
  • Excellent working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud
  • Understanding and past experience creating integrated content (copywriting and visual) across all marketing channels from digital, social media, paid media, mobile, but also understand offline and print
  • Digital, film, media and design skills with a solid understanding of media, film, design, copy and web practices
  • Extensive knowledge of design and relevant software is vital with familiarity with film-making techniques, video editing, copywriting and HTML skills
  • Ability to create innovative concepts and vision for others to work on, while remaining open to other’s ideas
  • Project management experience with a focus on creative direction

  • Strong ability to proactively manage multiple projects simultaneously at pace whilst maintaining strict attention to detail
  • Strong leadership skills in order to hire, develop and oversee the creative team
