The Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage (BCES) is one of the flagship research centres at the Birmingham Energy Institute. Since 2013, BCES has grown rapidly and enhanced reputation for its research. With ongoing programmes and a large number of research and commercial projects beginning during 2021, a skilled and experienced research manager is required to manage day-to-day activity from a selection of projects, maintain and then improve current levels of research income and contribute to the development of a small team of professional staff.
Summary of Role
The aim of the role is to contribute at a senior level on a sustained basis to maintaining and improving the performance of the Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage (BCES).
The role will involve working closely with the Centre director to identify relevant and strategic opportunities for research income generation, to seek leading roles in novel areas of research, and to generate positive profile and impact for BCES. Identifying appropriate efficiencies within BCES is a major priority, ensuring that the Centre maintains its ability to deliver at pace.
BCES day-to-day activity will include end-to-end project management for research (public and private) and engaging project stakeholders. A significant proportion of time will be spent developing consortia for research grant applications, taking the lead on behalf of the director as necessary and driving initiatives forward. The post-holder will contribute directly to proposal writing.
Engagement at both School and College level is required to act as a conduit between the Operations Team and BCES, maintaining a positive relationship through regular communication and joint problem-solving.
Line management duties cover: 1 x Project Manager and 1 x Network Manager.
Some international travel (Covid-19 permitting) may be required throughout the job lifetime.
Ensuring that BCES runs effectively will be an important element of the post-holder’s activity:
• Secretariat duties for quarterly management meetings with the BCES Director/Co-Directors;
• Engage School and College Operations Team staff as appropriate to inform them of recent and planned developments;
• Coordinate initiatives with the Birmingham Energy Institute, to ensure mutual complementarity.
• Ensure that direct reports set performance targets annually and work with them to ensure they achieve their goals;
• Create a safe, friendly environment where direct reports can talk openly and honestly.
• Maintain a positive sense of morale;
• Ensure that major initiatives covered by direct reports (Tyseley Energy Park and the Supergen Energy Storage Network+) are delivered effectively;
• Ensure that line management style prioritises balancing wellbeing and meeting business needs appropriately;
• Co-identify opportunities for development across the School, College, institution and externally.
Research and Project Management
The post-holder is expected to work closely with academic staff members to identify relevant research income opportunities and capture these, as well as managing them once they are set up:
• Leading the end-to-end management of research projects; including monitoring and delivery, reporting, procurement and risk management;
• Contributing directly to project deliverables (where appropriate) as required;
• Developing consortia for funding opportunities, contributing directly to bid writing, managing stakeholders and overseeing internal and external submission processes;
• Bringing various strategic initiatives from the Director/Co-Directors to fruition, heading up working groups of professional staff from across the University where necessary.
• Engaging project monitoring staff and project partners to report and facilitate the progress of projects;
• Negotiating the position of BCES (and where appropriate, the post-holder’s) in projects or proposal creation processes;
• Developing and maintaining relationships with stakeholders from academia and industry.

• Support the Centre/Institute Deputy/Director/professional services line manager and the senior management team in the development, training and implementation of systems and operational processes;
• Support their professional services line manager in implementation of BCES’ strategy.
• Educated to degree level or significant equivalent experience in an education/higher education environment
The post-holder will have:
• Excellent communications skills, both oral and written
• Excellent negotiation skills, with the ability to acquire a leading role for BCES and BEI in activities of strategic value
• A knowledge of leadership that can be applied to managing a team
The post-holder will be able to:

Knowledge and Experience
Applicants must demonstrate:
• Knowledge of / experience in the energy sector
• Experience of managing and delivering complex, collaborative projects
• Experience of working within a higher education or research funding space is desirable.
• Knowledge of bid writing and submission processes to UK Research and Innovation (other funders including BEIS are desirable)
• Track record of contributing directly to successful funding proposals
• Experience of leading a team
• Experience of supporting senior leadership
