Full time starting salary is normally in the range £30,942 to £40,322 with potential progression once in post to £42,792 a year.

COMPARE was initially a 5 year joint strategic investment by the University of Birmingham (£5m) and University of Nottingham (£5m). Commencing in August 2016 its key aims were to support multidisciplinary research across multiple Colleges and Institutes. Since that time COMPARE has grown significantly in size, operations and scope such that under the newly appointed leadership of Professor Davide Calebiro, it is planned to become a Centre embedded into the MDS Structure.
Summary of Role
To create and contribute to the creation of knowledge by undertaking a specified range of activities that will involve use and demonstration of cutting-edge light microscopy, providing training and expertise. Many of the microscopes involve use of complex computer algorithms and highly specialist knowledge as they are they are the ‘first of their kind’. The individual appointed will be the expert in charge of their day-to-day operation and all aspects of training. The appointed individual will be the lead microscopist in the Centre of Membrane Proteins and Receptors which covers £4m of specialist light microscopes.

Main Duties/Responsibilities

The responsibilities may include some but not all of the responsibilities outlined below.

  • Maintain the microscopes in the COMPARE Advanced Microscopy Facility.

  • Develop research objectives and proposals for use of the range of specialist microscopes, including advising graduate students, postdoctoral and PIs on the right microscope for each purpose

  • Training of all individuals who wish to use the microscopes

  • Contribute to writing bids for research funding for further specialist microscopes

  • Analyse and interpret data from the advanced microscopes

  • Apply knowledge in a way which develops new intellectual understanding into the organisation of membrane proteins

  • Disseminate research findings for publication, research seminars both internally and externally

  • Provide guidance to PhD students where appropriate to the discipline

  • Contribute to developing new models, techniques and methods

  • Undertake management/administration arising from the use of the microscopes to achieve full cost recovery in five years

  • Contribute to COMPARE research-related activities and research-related administration

  • Contribute to enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader

  • Collect research data; this may be through a variety of research methods, such as scientific experimentation, literature reviews, and research interviews

  • Present research outputs, including drafting academic publications or parts thereof, for example at seminars and as posters

  • Provide guidance, as required, to support staff and any students who may be assisting with the research

  • Deal with problems that may affect the achievement of research objectives and deadlines

  • Promotes equality and values diversity acting as a role model and fostering an inclusive working culture.

Person Specification

  • First degree in area of specialism and normally, a higher degree relevant to research area or equivalent qualifications

  • High level analytical capability

  • Ability to communicate complex information clearly

  • Fluency in relevant models, techniques or methods and ability to contribute to developing new ones

  • Ability to assess resource requirements and use resources effectively

  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes

  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
